On what principle does the oscillometric method work?
The oscillometric method does not measure systolic and diastolic pressure, but the mean arterial pressure. It then calculates the two remaining values (systolic, diastolic pressure) using an algorithm.
This method is usually very accurate, but may fail in people with arrhythmias. Arrhythmia can affect the calculation algorithm, causing the blood pressure calculation to be inaccurate or the blood pressure monitor to fail to measure blood pressure at all.
How does the listening method work?
When you inflate the cuff of the blood pressure monitor, the cuff squeezes an artery in your arm, creating an artificial obstruction to blood flow.
The pressure in the cuff then slowly decreases until blood starts flowing through the artery again, which is reflected by audible heart sounds in the phonendoscope.
Once the pressure on the arm has dropped so much that the artery is no longer compressed and normal blood flow has resumed, the echoes are no longer audible.
The pressure at the first audible echo corresponds to the systolic pressure value (SYS), the pressure at the last audible echo to the diastolic pressure value (DIA).
It is therefore the most accurate method of measuring blood pressure, even in the case of cardiac arrhythmia.
